If you google “Symbols of Russia” you’ll find everything – from vodka to Russian Two-headed Eagle. But there is not much about Russian nature and its symbols. It’s a pity because if you want to understand Russian symbolism better (in poetry for example) you really need to know what’s special for us among trees and flowers, animals and landscape.

A symbol of Russian nature and Russian beauty, the birch tree (“bereza” or “berezka” in Russian) has a very special place in the country’s culture. It is a poetic symbol of the feminine, a lyrical image of spring, light, and virginal purity. The slender birch brings to mind the image of a humble girl, beautiful, and very Russian.

The fossil record of chamomile indicates that they originated or naturally evolved in the west Asian region of the current Russian Federation. It was then a matter of time that the flower started spreading all over the European and Asian continent. This is the reason that Chamomile is so deeply rooted in the Russian culture and Russians have long been using it for different purposes ranging from decoration and celebration to medication.

On the other hand, the overuse of the image of the bear by foreigners visiting Russia prior to the 20th century led to the image of bear being a sort of insider joke, postulating that “Russian streets are full of bears” as an example of factually inaccurate information about Russia.
