Home sweet home: learn some useful Russian phrases

With more and more countries going back into lockdown, we will be spending way more time at home. Again ???? Let’s check if you remember how to say “I’ve spent the whole day in my bedroom” so you can tell the Russian-speaking world about your quarantine routine.

Buildings and rooms:
дом = a house
квартира = an apartment
многоквартирный дом = an apartment building
частный дом = a private house
комната = a room
коридор = a hall
кухня = a kitchen
спальня = a bedroom
туалет = a restroom
офис = an office
гостиная = a living room
детская = a kids’ room
ванная = a bathroom

To say that something is in a room, we use the preposition “in” – “в” with the room names. After prepositions “в” and “на” to talk about a location, we use the Prepositional case.

I live in an apartment = Я живу в квартире
She’s in the room = Она в комнате
I’m in the office = Я в офисе
My cat is in the bedroom = Мой кот в спальне

But we use “on” – “на” to talk about something in the kitchen.
Dad is in the kitchen = Папа на кухне

Гостиная, детская и ванная change like adjectives, not nouns because they describe a room — гостиная комната, детcкая комната, ванная комната — but the word комната is usually omitted in spoken speech:
в гостиной / детской / ванной (комнате).

Check yourself:
1 Katya is in the bathroom.
2 Mom is in the hall.
3 We live in a house, not in an apartment.
4 The kids are in the kids’ room.
5 The dinner is in the kitchen.

Answers:
1 Катя в ванной.
2 Мама в холле.
3 Мы живем в доме, а не в квартире.
4 Дети в детской.
5 Ужин на кухне.

And here are some lockdown-themed phrases for more advanced learners:

We’re lucky to have 3 rooms in the apartment. I can always find a place to hide from the family. = Хорошо, что у нас есть 3 комнаты в квартире. Я всегда могу найти, где спрятаться от моей семьи.
