Do Russians celebrate Halloween? They do! We love all things party! The holiday is not as widespread as in the western world, but we sure do have some Halloween themed parties in clubs.

The most popular costumes are a zombie (зомби), a ghost (привидение), а witch (ведьма), a princess (принцесса). As a rule, kids don’t go trick-or-treating, the celebration is usually for adults.

This year the celebrations were much more low-key because of you-know-what, but we still decided to teach you some Russian vocabulary just in case you meet a cute ghost on your way.

Let’s start with some easy ones:
Halloween – Хеллоуин
zombie – зомби (in singular and plural forms)
monster – монстр
costume – костюм
mask – маска
pumpkin – тыква
ghost – привидение
black cat – чёрный кот
witch – ведьма

And now some phrases:
Oh no! – О нет!
Scary / spooky – страшный (masc) / страшная (fem) / страшное (neut) / страшные (plur)
creepy – стрёмный
a creepy room – стрёмная комната
A scary witch – страшная ведьма
A scary mortgage rate – страшный процент по ипотеке
I’m (not) scared! – Мне страшно!
I’m (not) afraid of + Genitive – Я (не) боюсь…
I’m afraid of monsters! – Я боюсь монстров!
I’m afraid of ghosts! – Я боюсь привидений!
We will celebrate Halloween tomorrow! – Мы будет отмечать Хэллоуин завтра!
Are you coming to the party? – Ты идёшь на вечеринку?
Your costume is amazing! – У тебя классный костюм!
