Our students who come to Russia for the second or the third time always bring ТАПОЧКИ (slippers) with them. They say that’s because Russians are weird about slippers, and they are really important in Russia. Actually, that’s another thing that seems to be absolutely normal to Russians, but weird to foreigners. When you come back home the first thing you do is taking off your shoes and putting on slippers. Russians mostly do not like to be barefooted at home. Warm ТАПОЧКИ is something that makes us feel cozy and comfortable. Old grandmas would scold their grandchildren for not putting on the slippers because they don’t want them to get cold or step on something on the floor and hurt their feet. This attitude is so common and natural for Russians and we don’t really understand what surprises foreigners about that. Don’t you wear slippers at home? Aren’t your feet uncomfortable and cold?
