Let’s make the most of the situation and explore Russian cultural gems

Welcome. Many of us are staying at home these days and dreaming about those days when we will be allowed to travel and explore again. Those of you who want to experience the cultural heritage of Russia in the comfort of your own home, keep reading! This week our author Elena will take you on a virtual tour – I will share some advice (including the links) on what virtual tours you can take yourself on to explore Russia’s cultural gems.


The cultural heritage of Russia in the comfort

My absolute favorite is a 5-hour virtual tour of Hermitage. This is probably the minimum amount of time that one will need to explore one of Russia’s most world-renowned museums. By the way, it was filmed on an iPhone 11 Pro. Nonetheless, and will take you back in time and make you want to visit the hermitage when everything is back to normal! Are you a huge fan of Russian ballet? The Bolshoi Theatre, a historic theatre in Moscow, Russia, has a collection of ballets available for free of their website. Dress up and watch the best ballet dancers perform in your living room!
The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg also has a virtual tour feature available on their website.
Another useful resource that has lots of virtual tours around Russia is Culture.Ru. From tours of Tzarskoe Selo (the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments and the Palace and Park Ensembles of the Town of Pushkin) and Yasnaya Polyana, Leo Tolstoy’s house museum in Tula to Kizhi in Karelia. You will never get bored!

My other favorite museum is Peterhof and spring is the perfect time for a virtual visit.
