If during your stay in Petrozavodsk you get tired of city life, do not hesitate and take a trip to one of the most magnificent natural monuments in Karelia – mountain park Ruskeala

Two of the previous articles about our students’ cultural activities were dedicated to the big, historical cities. However, the majority of tourists visit the Republic of Karelia to explore and enjoy the indescribable charm of its nature. Ruskeala is one of the places where one can truly immerse himself into the picturesque scenery, breath fresh air, relax, and clear his thoughts.

Karelia is not a realm of cities, it is a region of lakes, forests and stones. Do not miss the opportunity to see its true nature with the “Enjoy Russian” language school

Everyone knows that Karelia has a myriad of lakes, forests, and other natural monuments. Yet, Ruskeala is not completely a creation of natural forces. It is a former open-pit mine, filled with groundwater. The gorgeousness of its marble is highly valued all over the world. For instance, did you know that many elements of Saint Petersburg’s well-known architectural marvels were made of Ruskeala marble, including lining of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral, window sills of the Hermitage, and floors of the Kazan Cathedral? If this list does not impress you enough, then take a look at the pictures of our students’ trip to this place. Some people think that gray has only fifty shades. Ruskeala marble proves that there is much more variety of this color, ranging from almost white to those as dark as the sky before a thunderstorm. Nevertheless, the surrounding forest adds color to this obscure palette. Our students – Eleanor, Emma, and Julia – visited this place in autumn, so they witnessed how breathtaking is the splendid contrast between bright yellow leaves and majestic gray marble.
What else can this mountain park offer to its visitors? Plenty of opportunities, actually:
  • Add some romantic flavor to your trip and rent a boat;
  • Spice it up a bit and take a ride at a flying fox;
  • Become an adventurous explorer and take a tour of the caves to see a splendid underground lake.
Karelia has a unique and beautiful face, and it is carved in Ruskeala marble. If you want to see it, do not think twice, just pick up a course and visit us to fully immerse into the magical charm of Russian nature.
